Narrowly maintains control of the House of Representatives.
Lawmakers returned to Washington, D.C., on Sunday to begin the first session of the 117th Congress. One of the first actions taken by the newly elected legislative body was to elect the Speaker of the House. Representative Nancy Pelosi was re-elected to her position with 216 votes in her favor. Representative Kevin McCarthy will remain the House Minority Leader, having received 209 votes.
Only five members differed from their party by not casting votes for Speaker Pelosi. During her opening remarks, Speaker Pelosi didn’t address the narrow split in the vote, rather focusing on the diversity of the 117th Congress. She said, “It gives me great pride to serve as speaker of the most diverse House in American history, with a record-shattering 122 women, 100 years after women won the right to vote.”
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- That God would give Speaker Pelosi wisdom as she leads the House of Representatives.
- For God to empower Congress to pass laws for the good of the nation over the next two years.
- For the Lord to help the 117th Congress to work cooperatively with the White House.
